Nonamu’s silk scarves and designs are wearable art, designed to set you apart. They are inspired by the indulgence of the centuries old Peranakan (Baba Nyonya) heritage of Malaysia. The colourful and intricate designs reflect its local culture where each piece weaves authentic heritage.
Industrial designer, Ai Pheng Yeap lives and breathes Peranakan (Baba Nyonya) culture because she grew up surrounded by it in Penang. She wanted to pay tribute to the culture by fusing the traditional with the modern, therefore creating Nonamu. The brand is to preserve a craft and a history that is slowing fading away, incorporating the heritage into each design.
The vibrant colours and exotic designs that are present in each product. They reflect every bit of the Peranakan heritage of Malaysia, from the language to the clothes, to their porcelain designs, all the way to the food.
If anything reflects the indulgence of the Peranakan / Baba Nyonya culture it’s their spoons. A purely functional tool to most, the increasingly rare porcelain spoons of the Baba Nyonya were commissioned for special occasions and ceremonies. The finest craftsman would then create each one, painstakingly adorning them with intricate motifs. This scarf blends striking colours with ornate symbols. The mythical phoenix represents beauty and grace – a common motif in Peranakan porcelain. It’s joined by a lady dressed in traditional Nyonya Kebaya. As seen in Harper's Bazaar Digitally printed on 100% silk with hand-rolled finish, made in England. Each scarf comes in our signature gift box.
